Spanking, Should We allow Psychology to Tell Us What to Do?

Grandma was reading the paper one morning after we had breakfast when both grandpa and I heard a quiet little chuckle from her.  She then looked hard at me for a few seconds then started grinning as she shook her head and said to me.

“Nah, you’re too old any more.” She then turned to grandpa and said,

“ According to this article, grandpa, the boy is too old to be spanked any more.  Now what do we do when he acts up and behaves like a 5 year old?  But it does tend to affirm what parents have known innately ever since time began then she read this excerpt from the article.

Compared with those who had never experienced physical discipline, those who endured parental swats between the ages of 2 and 6 were much more likely to report positive academic records and optimism about their future. Even those who received their last spanking between the ages of 7 and 11 reported that they volunteered more, compared with those who had never been spanked. In fact, the never-spanked group never scored the best on any of the 11 behavioral variables analyzed. According to Prof. Gunnoe, her research, which was based on surveys of 183 adolescent children, doesn't provide answers to parents as to how they should discipline so much as undermine the rationale for banning spanking”

Grandpa just smiled as he looked at me and said "Good question, grandma. Well, boy what should we do now that you are too old to spank?"

It was interesting to hear what folk's read about spanking/ discipline etc. Been awhile since I read on any of this, and just happened to be stopping by since I heard about your site through Mr.Truth. I have had an awkward childhood and my daughter's (3) as well being parented by me. I did get spanking's as a kid, however, I was also first taken away by the state and institutionalized at age 8, because they said my mom left us alone all the time and was out partying, then was back home here and there a couple year's, mom kept on leaving dad because girl's liked dad and mom didnt like it, moved around all over the nation at that time.Ran away at age 13, not because of my parent's at all though, I just didnt like school and conformity, and was a lil antsy, couldnt get into the whole thing, never returned to live home, disciplined more in correctional facilities, then back and forth to the street's, done alot of drug usage, and was anti- authority I reckon most of my life to an extent. My 3 daughter's I never spanked .... but NOT because I am against it, not at all ... as odd as this may seem ... they never actually gave me a reason to need to, no shit ... they also were nothing like me and my renegade youth way's, all went to college and got degree's and got them on scholarship's even. What I done as a parent? I really dont know .... many teacher's have told me over the year's how great my daughter's were, top student's, head of social function's etc, and asked me what my trick was as a parent? I actually didnt do nothing ... but tell them to think out of the box and for themselves, instead of what the "herd" think's. BUT .... and THIS is a "big" but .... I have really seen some wild ratshit kid's that are absolutely out of control ... and my opinion is ... they could use a good ass whipping from someone.

Thank You Sir .........

I never spanked my kids but I think the trick is to have them think you will if necessary. I've always said respect is born out of fear.

and the willingness to back the implied threat up too. i agree truth.
