A Walk Through History With Our Presidents

Of the 43 men who have held the office of the Presidency, eight of them were left handed.

If you think that Obama is dishonoring the office of the Presidency by bowing to his visitors then it must be that Geo. Washington dishonored the office first. Washington thought that the handshake was beneath the office of the Presidency therefore bowed to his visitors.

Washington was the only President that did not live in Washington D.C.

Obama is considered our 44th President yet only 43 men have held the title of the Presidency.

Of the 44 presidents, 5 were not elected into office.

In 1835 the U.S. Government was debt free for the only time in history under the presidency of Andrew Jackson.

Andrew Jackson was the only President that was also a prisoner of war. He was a prisoner of war in the Revolutionary war.

Martin Van Buren was the first President to be born in the United States.

John Tyler was the only President to hold office in the Confederacy.

November 7, 1848 was the first time a presidential election was held on the same day in every State.

Abe Lincoln was first President to be born outside of the original 13 colonies.

The first White House telephone was installed, by Alexander Graham Bell himself, during the Rutherford Hayes administration.

Seven Presidents were born in a log cabin with James Garfield being the last.

Grover Cleveland was a public executioner prior to being President and personally hung two men himself.

Harry S. Truman was the first President to receive a $100,000 salary plus a $50,000 expense account in 1949.

Richard Nixon was first President to receive a $200,000 salary with his $50,000 expense account.

Richard Nixon is also the first and only President to resign from office.

Gerald Ford was the only president whose two assassination attempts against him were made by women

At 69 years old, Ronald Reagan was the oldest elected president.

Barack Obama was the first president born outside of the contiguous United States.

Geo. W. Bush was first President to receive a $400,000 salary plus a $50.000 expense account. This was double the salary of his predecessor, Bill Clinton.

If I Understand it Right, Obama Bows Lower to the Leaders of Muslim Countries, than to the Others. There are Lots of Presidents who Nod Their Heads, but Obama Bows much Lower than what is Customary.

The Rest of the Facts are Quite Interesting. I'm actually Glad that this was Lighter and Not Quite so Thought Provoking as some of your Posts, because I am behind in my Reading and Sometimes you are Thought Provoking to the Point of Being Overwhelming.

"Of the 44 presidents, 5 were not elected into office."
An odd statistic, considering that of the 44 presidents, 5 had brown eyes. :)

BB,

Hey BB,
Does that Mean that if a Person has Brown Eyes then there is no Need of an Election? Hey! Maybe I'll be the Next President. lol.

Since Christmas is coming up, we note that the very
first decorated Christmas tree IN the whitehouse was that of Franklin Pierce in 1856. Not until 1923, when Calvin Coolidge lit the National Christmas tree, did they have one outside. Live trees on the White House lawn were used until the tradition of various states donating large conifers begin in 1954. (BTW, my wife puts up more outdoor lights than ol Coolidge had on his first tree!)...

All those presidents before Martin van Buren...
how did they get around
Art 2, sec 1-
"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President"? The interpetation must be
convuluted, because Albert Gallatin who was a citizen since 1780, could NOT run for president (too bad, IMO, he would have been a good one)...even though the Consitution did not take
effect until ratification
in 1788. Dunno, I'll leave that to you lawyer types..

BB,
simply put, basically that clause is usually interpretated as meaning any person running for that office cannot or was not ever a citizen of another nation prior to being a U.S. citizen with those exceptions who had to be born in this country when we were colonies.

Mr. Gallatin was a Swede who immigrated to the U.S. he had the same problem as Schwarzenegger does.

And Obama is not the first to have his citizenship questioned either. Chester Arthur was rumored to have been born in Canada.

here is a link that explains the problem.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/politics/28mccain.html?_r=1

it explains that the idea probably came from John Jay who was worried about the possible consequence that might result from it since the President is the Commander in cheif of the armed forces too.

"Gerald Ford was the only president whose two assassination attempts against him were made by women" Poor guy,
he seemed to tend to self-destruct :)
That 'natural born' clause, makes one ponder..
no test-tube babies, no
one born by caesarian?

mmm great ponder BB,LOL,
and to think Gerald Ford was a model in his earlier years too. maybe that is why he attracted the girls. lol
