Problems, Problems, Problems galore

If anyone has been wondering where I’ve been lately, the answer is no where. Don’t really know where that is or even if it is a good place to be but there I have been. Actually, I’ve been really busy the last few days. Yup, really busy. I’ve been busy trying to perfect the art of procrastination. I will say that I’ve gotten to the point where my brain has finally began to join in and do some procrastination of its own.

When it does seem to work at what it should be doing it has only created more problems for itself to solve. Like last week, it decided I should start on my Spring cleanup in thinking I would have it done by next fall but even there it has been going to bed each night after I had revealed something to it that needed a solution.

Took up the carpet in one of the bedrooms thinking that I would only need to wash and wax the tile under it but once I took the carpet up I found a whole bunch of broken tile. That means retiling the floor, doesn’t it? Then I thought that if I was going to do that I better just scrape up all of the rest of the tile and start all over.

To top that off, my last renter left a whole slew of abandoned property, like dressers and other furniture, so I have that all over the place too, especially in the kitchen area. So, just to get around in this house requires going through a maze. Most of the dressers have no drawers or the drawers there are have their bottoms busted out and need repair.

So, you can see how busy I’ve been and it all can be blamed on procrastination. Take a hint from the Griper, don’t allow your brain go into procrastination mode. It can only cause far greater problems. Even Dawg prefers staying outdoors now. And I don’t even have to bribe her to go out in the morning any more.

Griper,
When I procrastinate, I call it lack of drive. I just don't feel moved to do anything. Nothing seems worth doing, especially when the chore seems overwhelming. It's a very discouraging place to be.

Before I have the energy or drive to do any of the boring, mundane and routine things of life, I have to find something that I will also allow myself that seems worth doing. This gives me something to look forward to after the boring and mundane is completed.

In short, keep plugging away at it, but also take breaks and go do something fun. Just as you once told me; "Don't forget to enjoy the journey."

Just pinpointing the problem will help overcome it. I agree that procrastination caused your problem, you should have kicked the renter out sooner, BEFORE he caused you so much work. Now, the blame game is done, go grab a beer and relax for a while. You can fix the floor tomorrow. Oh, and then put an add in the local paper for "free firewood".

Average American,
Do you mean pinpointing the problem of the floor that needs fixing or do you mean pinpointing the problem of procrastination?

I've had a "Lack of Drive" problem my entire life. It comes and goes, but the tendency towards it has never gone away.

As a student I was a horrible procrastinator, yet I at times did it deliberately because I worked better under pressure. For example, if I allowed myself several weeks to get a term paper done, it would take me several weeks and many many hours. Yet if I put the paper off until the day before it was due, I would somehow figure out a way to get it done within 6 to 8 continuous hours.

Not everyone has the endurance to keep at the same project for 6 to 8 hours straight, but I work better that way. I'm a horrible multi-tasker and hate continually shifting gears every hour or less to work on something different. This practice breaks my concentration and puts me into a state of confusion, whether than focus.

I was often criticized for the procrastination, but in the school setting I never apologized for it. When Procrastination is caused by Lack of Drive, though, that is another matter and I need to continually fight to stay above this tendency.

Procrastination in a family setting can cause problems too, because the procrastinator has created the need for a very busy day or more, in which there is little room left for interruption and time for the family. This is why any form of planned procrastination, such as I mentioned relating to school, should always keep this in mind.

I'm the Procrastinator Extraordinaire-- in fact, I wait to procrastinate. :-)

Also learning that being a landlord is more work than neccessary... Well take care and hopefully you get all this squared away soon.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you, Griper. I'd write more here, but I need to clean out my closet. I've been procrastinating that one far too long!
